Research Profile

Who?

Prof. Richardus: “I am driven by curiosity. I want to understand the factors that determine what we encounter in life. As a medical doctor, I always wanted to know the cause of a disease in my patients. Just providing symptomatic relief bothered me. As a scientist, I study the epidemiology of infectious diseases.”

Why?

The recent SARS and influenza pandemics have shown that we need effective measures to fight major epidemic outbreaks. However, the authorities often fail to communicate the need for large-scale measures in a trustworthy manner. As a result, the acceptance of such measures among the general population and high-risk groups is low.

What?

Prof. Richardus: “We want to develop evidence-based communication advice for European health authorities for use in the event of major epidemic outbreaks. This should help them to communicate the need for large-scale measures in a trustworthy manner. Examples of such measures are vaccination and antiviral therapy.”

How?

For effective behavioural and communication strategies, we need to integrate social, behavioural, communication and media sciences. Therefore, the E-com@eu consortium brings together and harnesses the latest thinking from fields such as biomedical sciences, strategic communications, social marketing and behavioural economics.
