Research Profile

Who?

Professor Claudia Grothe's motivation for initiating and heading the BIOHYBRID project was to find a stand-alone alternative to autologous nerve grafts. "We do this by bringing together experts in peripheral nerve regeneration and a passion for cutting edge biomaterials research."

Why?

With about 300,000 cases a year derived from injuries of peripheral nerves, it represents a major cause of morbidity and disability in Europe with a high social impact. Therefore, regeneration of damaged peripheral nerves is a major field where innovative therapies in regenerative medicine can be applied on a clinical level.

What?

BIOHYBRID aims to develop an innovative biohybrid device for regeneration after injuries to peripheral nerves as a result of accidents. To this end, the structural and bio-chemical properties of artificial nerve guides and growth conditions are studied.

How?

The multidisciplinary consortium consists of 10 partners from Europe and Israel, medical research institutions and world-renowned hospitals partnering with companies form the private sector in all stages of R&D. The output covers a broad range: novel biomaterials, operation protocols and exchange programmes for scientists.
