Research Profile

Who?

“Biomedical research is synonymous with collaboration. It is extremely important for clinicians and researchers to learn to speak each other’s language”, says Neurogeneticist Arn van den Maagdenberg. He works with clinicians, electrophysiologists, biochemists and molecular biologists to unravel the mystery of migraine.

Why?

Migraine is very common: it affects 15% of European citizens. It is also the most costly neurological disease in the EU, costing more than €27 billion per year. Current medications are only moderately effective. “To develop better drugs, we need to understand how attacks are triggered and become chronic”, says Professor Ferrari.

What?

EUROHEADPAIN aims to understand how migraine attacks are triggered. In addition, the scientists want to know why some patients progress to chronic migraine. Professor Ferrari explains: “Many migraine patients have severe headaches nearly every day. We desperately need effective treatments to prevent attacks and chronification.”

How?

EUROHEADPAIN consists of ten academic partners and one small to medium-sized enterprise. The consortium originates from several previous collaborations within the field of headache and migraine. Professor van den Maagdenberg: “We will study patients and animal models to identify pathways and molecules involved in migraine.”
